Analysis of the problem:
Ventilation
and static electricity mean that computers and electronic equipment
accumulate a lot of dust around the fun, inside the box, on the keyboard,
etc.
- Dust & fluff will reduce the cooling efficiency inside the box and
possibly jam the fan, etc.
- CD DVD readers may not work correctly corrupting data.
- Accumulation of static electricity is increased by high levels of small dust
particles which are electrically charged, thus interfering with the proper
operation of the motherboard, and electronic cards.
- The main processor generates a lot of heat, and usually makes use of a fan,
should this jam the processor may overheat and either stop working or even
get damaged and need replacing.
|
|
Prevention:
Every 6-12 months take
the computer cover off (after having unplugged all cables), wearing a pair
of goggles for protection, clear all the dust from the inside of the box
specially around the fan(s) and the air inlet parts of the box, do the same
with the keyboard.
Professional organisations may want to do the same before repairing
or servicing a
computer or adding additional hardware as this helps keeping the
contacts/slots free from dust and charged static particles reducing
problems.

Selecting the right equipment:
The
compressor: should be oil-free or have adequate filtration to avoid
contamination of the equipment. (contamination and oil particles may reduce
cooling of electronic components, short delicate circuits, etc)
The hose: should be about 3-5 mt long (for convenience) either braided
(robust), or coiled for ease of use
The blow gun: depending on the size of the compressor either a blow gun
with a long nozzle to reach all parts even in narrow areas. Or an airbrush
which will offer the advantage of being small and easy to handle.
Goggles: a pair of safety goggles is highly recommended for safety, to
avoid dust particles going into the operator eyes when dusting.
|
|
Settings and operation:
A low
pressure (2-3 Bar) should be used to avoid the of compressed air displacing
components, or giving too much energy (speed) to dust particles or small
components that may be loose inside the unit.
A filter and/or water trap should be used to reduced the amount of
water(*) blown into the unit, or particles in the air sucked into the
compressor and coming out at the blowgun.
(*) Water is part of the humidity of the environment and as air is
compressed temperature increases, as air expands temperature decreases, so
vapour becomes water droplets as the air is blown out of the gun.
